Fruit Fly Don't Bother Me

Imagine for a moment you’ve gone to the local farmer’s market or produce stand, hand-picked some delicious fresh fruits and veggies and brought them home… only to be infested with pesky little fruit flies. Not just an annoyance, but fruit fly infestations can also be a difficult problem to control this time of year. This summer, with a few easy steps, you can bring your produce home and immediately sink your teeth into that juicy apple, without first having to swat away, or try to squish, those tiny little fruit flies.

It is difficult to completely prevent fruit flies from entering your home, but a few simple steps can keep these pests at bay.

  1. When you bring home fresh fruits and vegetables, consider placing them in the refrigerator. Refrigerating fresh produce will help to slow down the rate at which they ripen, which is what fruit flies need to thrive.
  2. For fruits and vegetables left out on the counter, it’s best to wash them and keep them covered. Covering your produce will limit fruit flies’ ability to access it, eliminating it as a food source.
  3. Empty kitchen trash cans frequently and regularly clean drains, garbage disposals and sinks. Keeping these areas free of food debris eliminates potential fruit fly breeding sites and food sources, which will help keep them at bay.

If you find yourself in the midst of an infestation, place a TERRO® Fruit Fly Trap where you see fruit fly activity. These apple-shaped traps are non-toxic and last for 30 days. They trap the fruit flies and keep them from escaping. Soon your fruit fly infestation will be a thing of the past and you can enjoy those long-awaited fresh fruits and veggies!
